Bank of America's chief risk officer is going on sabbatical

Geoffrey Greener has been the chief risk officer (CRO) at Bank of America for over 10 years and is seemingly in need of a break.

Greener, who was made CRO for BofA in April 2014 is taking a four to six week sabbatical from March. While he's away, BofA's risk function will be managed by Bruce Thompson, BofA's vice chair and head of enterprise credit.

Bank of America began its sabbatical program in 2023. Employees who've worked at the bank for more than 15 years can take a four to six week sabbatical when they hit their 15-year anniversary and every five years after that. Only two sabbaticals are permitted in the career of every person, though.

Greener has worked for Bank of America since 2007 and previously worked for Caxton and Goldman Sachs, so is presumably in need of a rest.

The Financial Times noted this week that US companies are fall behind on loan repayments at the fastest rate for a decade, and that Bank of America says it's one of the largest lenders to small businesses.

Sabbaticals have a habit of turning into exits in financial services, particularly - it seems - at JPMorgan. There is no indication that Greener intends to perpetuate his time away.
