Point72's Asia systematic trading head joins quant fund in Hong Kong
Cubist Systematic Strategies, the systematic arm of hedge fund Point72, has seen plenty of incomings recently, but also some outgoings. The latest in the latter camp is Sam Hou, head of Cubist's Asia trading team, who has just left for quant fund Qube Research & Technologies.

Hou has joined the London-based hedge fund as a quantitative research director in Hong Kong. He spent the last three and a half years at Cubist, but goes way back with founder Steve Cohen, and was an MD of quantitative strategies at his previous hedge fund, SAC Capital. He left SAC in 2009 and spent 12 years as founder and CIO of his own alternative investment manager, TrueArrow Capital, before reuiniting with Cohen at Cubist in 2021.
Qube has around 300 employees in APAC, half of which are in Hong Kong. Although Qube has been on a hiring spree in the past year, growth in its Hong Kong team has been more modest, with ~40 people joining in the past year.
Qube is also shaking up its APAC team by opening a new Sydney office. It features a glass-walled server room and a Lego station for its employees. Its most recent hire in the region is quantitative technology director Joshua Valencia, formerly a trading systems engineer at Maven Securites, Optiver and IMC Trading.
