Barclays has a new MD, with a complicated past

In recent years, AI has come for everyone, threatening to upend the financial order. In previous epochs, however, it was tokenisation that was coming for everyone, threatening to upend the financial order. AI experts are having a field day. It turns out that tokenisation experts are having a good time these days, too.

Artem Korenyuk joined Barclays this month as head of digital asset strategy, based in New York. He joined the British bank from Citi, where he spent three years, and was most recently head of the bank’s enterprise digital assets team. He was also a managing director (MD) at Citi.

Korenyuk joined Citi in 2026 as something of a homecoming; he started his career with the firm, back when he was in operations. He left the firm and spent 11 years at The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC), an industry-owned cooperative belonging to the banks using it that settles US securities. Neither Korenyuk nor Barclays responded to a request for comment.

As we’ve touched on before, tokenisation (which is what digital assets are – tokenised assets) is a huge threat to traditional banking operations. That’s because tokenising assets renders vast swathes of a bank’s workforce null, especially in the age of AI.
