Stephen Dainton was "delighted" with his new Barclays job two months ago. What changed?
Stephen Dainton is leaving Barclays. Bloomberg reported today (on the terminal) that he's retiring from the bank. Barclays declined to comment, but in a memo seen by eFinancialCareers and confirmed by Barclays, CEO CS Ventakrishnan (Venkat) said Dainton had been "a passionate advocate for our clients and for a truly connected Barclays" and that he wishes him "every success and happiness in the next chapter of his career." Dainton does not seem to retiring altogether, then.

Dainton didn't respond to a request to comment for this article, but two months ago he already seemed very happy in the current chapter of his career at Barclays. Having joined the British bank as global head of equities from Credit Suisse in 2017, Dainton spent years running global markets. In February 2024, Venkat promoted Dainton to run the whole investment bank, but two months ago, Dainton was moved again to become chief client officer. He wrote on LinkedIn at the time that he was "delighted" to be "stepping into" this role, which had been "newly created" - maybe especially for him.
Since then something seems to have changed. It's not clear what. Maybe Dainton has a new job on the buy-side? Maybe he didn't really want to be chief client officer after all? Maybe being the chief client officer involved too much travel (he seems to have spent recent months in Miami, Shanghai and Rome). Maybe he just wanted a rest?
Dainton has had a good, albeit complicated innings. He began his career in 1990. He left Credit Suisse after a large loss in the bank's equities division (which the Swiss bank was always at pains to point out). That didn't seem to adversely influence his career.
Dainton is/was a survivor. He was hired at Barclays by Tim Throsby, the former head of the investment bank and worked there during the Jes Staley years. Throsby recruited Dainton as head of equities, but when Throsby left two years later, Dainton became interim head of global markets in March 2019 and then permanent head of global markets in June. A year later, however, Dainton was demoted to deputy head of global markets and Ventakrishnan himself replaced him Barclays' global markets head.
Dainton hung on. Many of the people he'd hired from Credit Suisse left. Several years of his Barclays career are murky but the FCA Register shows him becoming 'head of key business areas' in July 2022 and chief executive of Barclays Capital Securities (which still exists for regulatory purposes) in 2023. Dainton's last big regulatory role at Barclays, as a person with a key and yet undefined responsibility for a senior management function, actually ended in May 2026. This was around the time Dainton proclaimed himself to be delighted. Aged 59, maybe he was simply happy to be finally on his way out.
