The combination of mismatched buyer and seller price expectations, higher interest rates limiting investment (and exit) opportunities, means private equity isn't what it was. However, carried interest is still huge, even if politicians in the UK and US are trying to clamp down on its tax privileges. There is still a lot of money to be made in the industry.
Private credit funds and jobs have been doing better. Private credit covers a wide variety of roles and practices. And carried interest opportunities in private credit are even bigger – for the time being.
Below is a list of private equity and credit firms that have open internship programs that you can apply to right now. Many private capital firms offer both. Bear in mind, though, that a lot of the biggest funds don’t hire interns at all – to work there you’ll have to get in through the traditional route, which typically involves starting in an investment bank and leaping across.
