Citadel Securities compliance chief in Europe joined Hudson River Trading

When moving from one major electronic market maker to another, it helps to know your new colleagues. James McQuillan, who recently joined Hudson River Trading (HRT) from Citadel Securities, is lucky in that regard; another of CitSec's most senior compliance people defected earlier this month.

McQuillan is joining HRT as its EMEA head of compliance. He spent six years at Citadel Securities, working as its EMEA chief compliance officer out of Citadel Securities' Dublin office. He also previously worked as head of compliance for publicly traded high-frequency trading firm Virtu Financial within its EMEA proprietary trading team.

While McQuillan joins HRT in Europe, New York-based Shay Deverell joined earlier this month as the firm's Americas head of algorithmic trading compliance. She was at Citadel Securities for even longer, over nine years, and was most recently the market maker's head of systematic equities compliance. 

Back-office functions like compliance are susceptible to layoffs in banks, but trading firms' teams are typically smaller. A public job opening for a head of compliance in HRT's Seoul office suggests that its compliance officers frequently liase with regulators and act as a middle-man between them and the rest of the firm's teams. Following Jane Street's issues with the Securities Exchange Board of India, there has been more scrutiny on these firms than ever and various changes in regulations that the firms have had to adapt to.
