Standard Chartered rehires senior Hong Kong banker who left 17 months ago

Standard Chartered in Hong Kong has rehired a senior shipping finance professional who left the bank just 17 months ago. Tyler Kim, who departed for asset manager CLSA Capital Partners in September 2018, returned to the sell-side and rejoined Stan Chart earlier this month, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Kim is now a director at Stan Chart, having been an associate director in shipping finance during the latter three years of his previous stint at the firm. Stan Chart did not respond to a request to comment on his move.

Kim’s return to Stan Chart sees him reunited with Abhishek Pandey. Singapore-based Pandey took over as global head of shipping finance in March 2019 (replacing Hong Kong-based veteran Nigel Anton), but he first joined the team in 2007, when it was first established. Shipping finance, which early last year was reportedly worth more than $5bn to the bank, is part of the wider structured finance business at Stan Chart and provides shipping clients with debt financing solutions and advisory services.

Cornell University graduate Kim first moved to Stan Chart in 2013 and predominately worked in the global corporates team in Seoul before he joined shipping finance and relocated to Hong Kong in 2015.

Kim is unlikely to be the most recent shipping finance team member for much longer – the unit currently has a vacancy in Singapore at associate director level, according to the Stan Chart careers site. To apply, you’ll need at least five years of deal structuring and/or execution experience, preferably in shipping finance.

Once on the job, you’ll be leading deal execution, including due diligence, business credit applications, and documentation negotiation. But you’ll also “play a key role” in the origination process, including preparing client pitches and deal appraisals. Other tasks include portfolio management and assisting with shipping market research.
