An innovative Standard Chartered team has hired a new head in Singapore

If you want to work in the Singapore fintech sector, but you don’t want to work for an unstable and poorly-paying startup, Standard Chartered has a team that may well pique your interest. It’s called SC Ventures, and it’s an innovation, ventures and fintech investments unit that was launched in March last year.

Moreover, SC Ventures – which we understand has less than 50 employees – has been hiring. Its latest senior recruit is Gwenda Phillips, who came on board as chief risk officer earlier this month, according to her LinkedIn profile. Stan Chart did not respond to a request to comment on her move.

Phillips is an ANZ veteran who spent the past year as the bank’s Sydney-based acting chief risk officer for digital. She joined ANZ in 2003 and worked across front-office, digital, strategy and middle-office jobs. Phillips was a risk and compliance manager early on in her ANZ career, but became a corporate banking relationship manager in 2006, and was appointed head of business execution for commercial and agricultural five years later.

In 2017, Phillips became head of risk and compliance for digital and wealth, a job that presumably endeared her to SC Ventures. She is also the founder of an Australian fintech startup consultancy.

Phillips’ new team, SC Ventures, provides a platform to incubate, launch, grow and spin off new tech ventures that are wholly or partially owned by Stan Chart. These include the new virtual bank that Standard Chartered is launching in Hong Kong. Secondly, SCV operates an investment fund that makes minority investments in fintech firms. And thirdly, SCV runs a global ‘intrapreneur’ programme for Stan Chart staff to submit fintech ideas.

Phillips is not the only senior recruit into SC Ventures who we’ve reported on. In December last year, SCV hired Fernn Lim – who was previously head of culture and fintech acceleration at The Open Vault, OCBC’s fintech lab – as a director.

SC Ventures is led by Alex Manson, who joined Stan Chart in 2012 and was latterly global head of transaction banking. Other senior internal transferees into SCV include Gautam Jain (formerly global head of digitisation and client access for transaction banking), Sachin Rajat Sharma (who led pricing and portfolio, group deposits), Maxime de Guillebon (ex-head of digital platforms) and Tatyana van der Horst (previously in FX sales).

If you want to work for SC Ventures in Singapore, it currently has vacancies for a UX-UI lead and for a project manager on its intrapreneur programme. In the latter job you’ll be helping to run bootcamps for employees who have ideas for tech projects and organising the panels that judge these ideas.
