Indications that Aberdeen Asset Management is hiring again

Fund managers with aspirations to break into Aberdeen Asset Management should take encouragement from the fact that it's had a very good six months, and appears to be hiring once again.

The Scottish fund manager has just released its interim results for the six months to 31 March, and they're pretty good. Pre-tax profit came in at a record 142.8m, which is a 54% increase on this point last year.

This is largely on the back of increased demand for its Asia-Pacific and emerging markets focused portfolios and is despite net outflows of 2.6bn from its fixed income products.

Aberdeen hasn't provided any insight into whether this improved performance is likely to result in any need to bolster its team. It has said, however, that's its focusing on "organic growth" after a period during which it digested business acquisitions from Royal Bank of Scotland and Credit Suisse.

There are certainly signs that the firm has an appetite to hire once again, but some previous connection with Aberdeen appears beneficial to your prospects.

In April it hired Andrew McCaffery to lead its fund of hedge fund business - he was previously head of absolute return strategies at Aberdeen before joining BlueCrest in 2008. Similarly, Mark Sanders, who joined last month as credit analyst within its high yield bond team, formerly worked at the Scottish asset manager.

Aberdeen also took on Steven Nicholls and Andrew Allen in April.

It also has some gaps to fill, having lost Steven Carter, its head of global data management, to Barings last month as well as credit analyst <a href="https://tools.morningstar.co.uk/t92wz0sj7c/stockreport/default.aspx?tab=3&vw=story&SecurityToken=0P00007NVM]3]0]E0EXG$XLON&Id=0P00007NVM&ClientFund=0&CurrencyId=GBP&story=138501957922654" target="_blank">Lisa MacLachlan.
