Service Engineer - Cloud Networks
Job Description

How will I help?

An exciting opportunity is available for a Service Engineer - Cloud Networks to join the Secure Network Services team in Group Technology. The Cloud Networks team is responsible for providing specialist services in relation to designing, planning, building, managing, optimising and supporting high-performance cloud network services and infrastructure for the Westpac Group.

The Service Engineer - Cloud Networks is an expert who partners with our customers and the wider networks and infrastructure teams to architect and deliver new cloud networks patterns as they pertain to public cloud and edge connectivity. You will be responsible for taking new cloud network patterns from conception all the way through to operationalisation, including designing the pattern and having it developed, tested, and deployed with the support of the wider Cloud Networks team.

A standard day for you might involve: consulting with technology & infrastructure customers on their use cases and requirements, architecting designs & presenting them to wider stakeholders, leading & working with other engineers in the Cloud Networks team to ensure a new pattern is developed, deployed and tested to the requirements, or perhaps even working with a cross-functional team to troubleshoot complex, multi-domain networking issues.

This role will have the ability to add significant value to the overall public cloud networks service and may suit a range of candidates from Mid to Senior level - we encourage all interested candidates to apply, regardless of perceived competency, as we are always on the lookout for exceptional talent to grow the team. Strong communication skills are essential for this role, in particular the ability to present to, and influence, both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

The role will include, and is not limited to, the following responsibilities:
  • Design and architecture of public cloud network & security infrastructure patterns, including edge and on-premises network connectivity.
  • Consultation with business and infrastructure stakeholders for new and changing cloud networks and infrastructure patterns.
  • Closely working with peers across the network and infrastructure domains, internally within Westpac and also externally with vendors, to ensure cloud network patterns are in-line with architectural strategies and vendor best practices.
  • Supporting and sometimes leading the troubleshooting of complex, multi-domain networking issues.
  • Understanding at a technical level how cloud network patterns are delivered, maintained, and managed by Infrastructure-as-Code, with a view to continuously improve existing delivery pipelines and procedures.
  • Championing, including conceiving and driving the implementation of, service improvement initiatives to enhance public cloud networks operational support services.
  • Provide input into the planning of future infrastructure requirements, including assessing existing infrastructure, conducting aspects of capacity planning, performance monitoring and tuning, and liaising with 3rd parties/external support vendors to ensure the stability and availability of technology infrastructure services to the business.
  • Engage with relevant stakeholders to evaluate if infrastructure requirements can be defined in terms of existing or new services to ensure user requirements are understood and appropriately translated into infrastructure requirements.
  • Provide input into the development of technology strategies, standards, and governance procedures to support the development of infrastructure services.
  • Work to ensure that cloud network patterns (new and existing) adhere to Westpac roadmaps, blueprints, and standards.
  • Performing detailed analysis of requirements to understand infrastructure feasibility, costing, effort estimates and support required from other infrastructure teams and vendors/partners.

    • Both design & implementation level understanding of public cloud network infrastructure and services at a component level, including cloud networking concepts such as virtual networks, subnets, IP addressing, routing, security groups, load balancers, firewalls, and network security policies across multiple cloud platforms.
    • Understanding of Layer-7 components including CDN, WAF, DDoS and TLS.
    • Prior experience with infrastructure provisioning and/or automation platforms such as Terraform, Python, or Ansible.

    • Proficiency in TCP/IP networking, DNS, DHCP, VPN, firewalling & micro-segmentation technologies and network monitoring tools. Experience with software-defined networking overlays (SDN) is a plus, such as VXLAN EVPN or VMware NSX.
    • Strong and intuitive analysis, problem solving and troubleshooting skills, including prior experience with diagnosing and resolving complex network issues, optimizing network performance, and conducting root cause analysis using available tooling capabilities.
